compact spare for '89-'92 rear disc

Today I found out the hard way that my compact spare will not fit over the rear disc's I swapped into the car. Does anybody know what the factory did differently for the spare? Maybe a different offset or did they simply too a spacer in with the spare? How 'bout it guys, what'd they do? MY car is an '84 that originally had drum brakes....
