Race tires and rims.

After a few autocrossses I'm thinking about getting a set of rims and tires just for racing. Not sure exactly what brand or size, but thats not exactly my question. I was wondering if a set of plain steel rims would hold up to the task, such as a set of U.S. Wheels that you could find in summit for about 30 to 40 each. I ask because I keep remembering the old steel rims with hub caps that fly off when cornerd hard, think the newer styles are any better??

14.73 @ 95... traction still a problem

The rims you mentioned are strong enough for Autocross. The bigger issue is the weight. As I recall they are about 21 ibs. Not bad for the price. Typical aftermarket rims would run 18-20 ibs and will cost you $150 and up. Go with something like Revolutions and your down to 16 ibs apiece (for about $250 apiece). I run Centerlines, ARE and stock IROC rims on my ASedan.

Don't have much help for you on the tire selection as I don't autocross. Tirerack has the Kuhmo Victoracers for Autocross, which are the same as I run on my ASedan, just more tread depth.

Good luck!!!!!!

Thanks for the help, I was pretty sure they would be strong enough but I just wanted someone elses opinion. Speaking of weight, the steel rims should be lighter than the stock aluminum, right? So, for the price I really can't complain can I.

I never weighed the stock rims as they have rain tires mounted so no way to accuratly weigh the rim. I would believe they are close in weight. The steel rims are primarily used by the left turn crowd.
