e-brake difference between 84 and 92?

several weeks ago I installed a rear out of an '84 in my '92, and now the e-brake doesn't even start working until a few click from the very top. I have tried adjusting the drums to get them as tight as possible, but it didn't help at all. Anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Thanks,
Brandon

When you say "adjusting the drums", do you mean adjusting the parking brake? There should be a threaded rod with a nut that you can tighten down somewhere under your car. Check up above the driveshaft in the "tunnel" underneath about as far back as the back edge of the doors. If you don't know what I'm talking about already, you should know it once you see it.

on 89-92 f-bodies there is no parking brake adjuster, the brakes are supposed to be "self-adjusting".

You will need to swap in the earlier style e-brake handle assembly with a threaded center rod. I had to do this when I swapped '88 disc brakes into my '90. Good luck, Lon.

Tab, you are confusing the drum brakes them selves being "self adjusting" with the e-brake. The brakes do self adjust, not the e-brake. There are no e-brake adjustments in the drum assembly. To adjust the e-brake, raise the car and look up in the tunnel where the drive shaft is. The two e-brake cables join together and then become one cable be the means of a bracket. This braket has a threaded rod and a nut on it. To tighen the e-brake cable, tighten the nut.. its that easy. Oh, you might want to drop the driveshaft, it gets the way.

Actually Tab is right. Maybe it was'90-'92 but there is no adjuster screw in the tunnel. The adjustment is made at the rear calipers I just don't know how to do it. This is for the PBR aluminum rear calipers. Believe me I know. Mine came loose from the bracket right before the rear axle and I've been trying to figure out how to let some slack out in the cable so I can hook it back into the bracket.

My fault. Sorry bout that. I forgot that things changed around 89 or so. I think I remember seeing something about this in a book back home. I'll check tonight and hopefully post something for you tomorrow. Not promising too much though.
