525 manual steering box

im new to this web site and trying to get some help. i have a 91 z28 with some mods. 383 carbed and just changed the ps box with a 525 manual steering box. now i have a problem with the pit arm. the shaft coming from the 525 steering box into the pitarm is too small or the hole in the pitarm is to big, so i figured that im going to have to change the pitarm. so my question is what is the best pit arm to use for this situation or what model vehicle should i get it from so i dont mess up the geometry. thanks for you time

Re: 525 manual steering box

You're better off finding a direct swap steering box. You have the old style box with the 3 bolt top cover. You want the newer style box with the 4 bolt top cover.

Re: 525 manual steering box

You could use an S10 pitman arm but only if you pull it from a pre 84 S10 with the same manual steering box. In 1984, GM started using the better 4 bolt top cover boxes on the S10's. The S10 pitman arm is slightly shorter than a third gen so the steering geometry won't be the same. Only a 4 cylinder S10 came with manual steering but not all 4 cylinder S10's have manual steering.

Those early (3 bolt top cover) manual steering boxes are not easy replacements for the late model power steering. Have you connected the steering shaft yet? The input shaft should also be a different size.

Re: 525 manual steering box

i think the input shaft is the one that attaches to the steering shaft right? if so i think i can make that fit. if and when i install the s10 pit arm what will i have to adjust or change to make this work well. this will be a freeway car mostly anyway.

Re: 525 manual steering box

well this is for all the people that are in the same situation as me at the moment. if you get a Saginaw 525 Manual Steering Box on you thirdgen from summit for $307. they sell a pitman are that a company makes for them to replace the pitarms that g.m. decided not to produce any more. for the pitarm the pn is HRE-2349, this ran me about $166 but i live in hawaii so shipping can get hi.the steering box is BRG-920008. hope this helps. oh by the way i have a 91 z28.
