it's usually just a single knock when I hit a small bump. I'm sure it is strut related, but would like to narrow it down as much as possible.

Check the rubber insulators where the swaybar attachs to the lower control arm, if they are worn out, broken or missing you will get that knocking sound too.

hmmm, good tip. I've got those energy suspention things all around. I notice yesterday that it is actually coming from the rear.

Check your tranny mount, those break often.
