This next summer i am gonna "rebuild" my car. How big of tires have people put in the rear of the car. and could you give me specs of the front and rear rims (backspacing and offset and all that crap)

and has anybody mini tubbed their car? I am considering on doing this, can anybody give me pointers on the procedure.

Depends on what kind of tires you plan on using.

My race car currently has 10 x 15 rims with a 5.5 backspace. You can go a little more with drum brakes but not much. Maybe 6" backspace max.

Height wise I currently have 28" tall tires and feel I can get 29 or 29.9 inside the wheels wells. 30" may require a bit of metal fabrication. When I go to 4.56 gears I'll have to fit a taller tire into the wheel wells so I'll know what needs to be shaped at that time.

Width, I currently have a 9" slick but feel I can go to an 11" before I need to start moving metal around. Those are drag tire measurements. The width is measured across the tread. DOT tires are measured across the section. DOT tire should be 11.5-12.5 max. Other will know for sure. I ran a ET Street 26 x 10.5 x 15 with lots of room.

As for mini-tubing there's very little you can remove. The passenger side spare tire dimple can be pounded out for a bit more room on that side. The fuel filler neck "may" be in the way on the driver side. The inside fender can't really be mini-tubed because of how the springs are positioned. If anything, you may gain 1" without repositioning the springs.

I was thinking that the springs would be a problem. What if I were to go with a different suspension setup?

like a independent rear suspension like a old vette or a heid's rear end. Is there even enough frame metal in the back to do something like that?

You may have to backhalf it to do something like that. There is no real rear frame on a third gen. The top of the shocks only bolt to sheetmetal.

Even to minitub the car, you would probably have to backhalf the car. The springs sit under what little rear frame there is already so to move them over, you need to move the frame rails in.

I think that putting in irs in a camaro would be cool. the rear ends are going for less than 1k on ebay. to me it seems that there is only a couple of mounting points to worry about, and you could probably incorperate the mounts with the spring mounts. i wonder if it would actually work.

BTW Im in the middle of Mini tubbing mine. One thing you have to do to stuff a larger tire back there is remove the bumpstop.

Right now I have a 27x11.5x15 under there and its hitting the bumpstop. but sits flush with the rolled outer lip of the fender.

stock spring and shock locations right now also.
