PLEASE HELP QUICK: TORQUE ARM REMOVAL
PLEASE HELP QUICK: TORQUE ARM REMOVAL
ok, I'm in the middle of a clutch swap and I have to remove the tranny. the torque arm has to come off, but I didn't know you had to take the springs out. I have the pinion jacked so I could take the driveshaft off. I am supposed to take the springs off but is there a way to take off the torque arm without taking the springs out? I don't have another set of jackstands to set the rear on to take them out, and my floor jack is under the tranny. How can I do this?

I think you just have to brace the front with something to keep it from swinging down, then unbolt it at its front mount. As long as you have something under it like some block or anything that will hold it. If it does drop itll probably just be a bitch to push back into place.

You don't have to take the torque arm off the remove the trans.
You do however need another set of jack stands. Jack the car up however high you need it, and support the frame with jack stands. Then let the rear end down as far as it will go, and jack it back up an inch or 2, just enough to unload the shocks. Support the axle tubes - the tubes themselves, not the shock brackets, or the pumpkin, or anything else - on a pair of jack stands. Make sure it's supported just above the point at which the shocks are fully extended.
If you do it this way, you get to leave the TA in; and there's so little force on it that you can just grab it with one finger and move it up and down wherever yo need it to go.

Every time I've removed the tranny I did it with the rear wheels on ramps. This puts no load on the torque arm, so when you remove the torque arm bushing from the trans it won't try to slam into the trans tunnel or the ground. To reinstall it you just need to push it inward toward the trans, it'll still be aligned up/down.
