Are my rear springs supposed to be only held in place by weight of car?
Are my rear springs supposed to be only held in place by weight of car?
I jacked up the rear of my car the other day from the subframe connector weld point to let the rear-end hang and I noticed that there was nothing holding the rear springs in place other than the weight of the car, is this normal or is there supposed to some sort of holding device like a clamp? When I go over a speed bump, very very slow it always thumps at the rear like the springs aren't attached to the axle, I think this is wrong, but I have nothing to compare it to. Please help.

The springs aren't held in by anything, and they aren't "attached" to the axle as such, they just can't quite fall out. The shocks keep the rear end from moving out of the car far enough for the rear end to fall far enough for the springs to fall out. If you unbolt the shocks with the rear end held up like that, the springs will in fact fall out, and you can put in new ones (which you need if you haven't already replaced them).
Some amount of noise is normal for these cars when going over speed bumps, just as a natural result of how the suspension parts move and work. However, a number of worn-out parts can make it worse; from a broken trans mount to bad shocks to LCA bushings to the torque arm bushing, and a few others besides those common ones.
