whenever i use my brakes they dont make me stop and i run into stop signs ect

If you don't anything about brakes except that they are supposed to make you stop and you don't have anyone around to SHOW you how to troublshoot/fix them, then take your car to a repair shop.
Brakes are definitely not something for a beginner to mess with.
