visual differences in calipers
is there any visual difference in the pre- and post-89 calipers? I have an '87 IROC rear sitting in my garage, but I just got a complete '91 disc setup from Ebay and the calipers look the exact same. the axles are obviously different but not the calipers. whats going on here?

There are substantial differences. The early calipers are steel. Laster ones are aluminum with ribs cast into the outside.

Do you have the axle's code handy? ("Front" of passenger side axle tube) Maybe it wasn't a '91?

no I didnt get the axle tube, I just got all of the hardware. axles, rotors, calipers, pads, brakelines and proportioning valve. I better not have just gotten screwed because I already have a complete '87 disc rear in my garage.
ok, I just e-mail the guy and asked him about the calipers and here is what he said:
"All that is in the picture is what you bid on , look at the picture. not all 89-92 camaros had the aluminum calipers, I took all of these parts off of a 91 10 bolt"
I thought EVERY car from '89 up had the new style caliper. am I wrong or did I just get screwed because he doesnt know what year they are off of?
and if it helps, here is the auction on ebay:

Maybe -he- can get the axle tube #? I didn't think those old-style calipers were around after '88, either... could the axle he got have been under a '91, and it was swapped before he got there?

thats what Im beginning to think is that it was swapped before he got to it. I'll e-mail him today and see if he'll give me the axle tube code. if he doesnt then I'll know that he knew it was swapped.

89 and later also had 11.65 dia. rotors instead of 10.5 inch dia. how big are the rotors? I don't know if the steel cals would bolt to the bigger rotors?

D*MNIT!!!! this sucks, I kinda figured as soon as I pulled the stuff out of the box that it wasnt right. well, I'll still probably use them anyway now that I've got them unless I can get rid of them for the new ones. doubtful but I'll try. since the parts are from an older one and I've got a '92, will the axles even work? The '87 IROC rear Ive got in the garage has unequal length axles without c-clips, these are the same length and have c-clips. is something wrong here too or is it just me?

Your 10 bolt has equal length axles. Count the splines on those axles: There should be 28 splines on the axle if it is from a 1989-up application. Otherwise, if theres 26 splines, it is from the old 1982-1988 application.
You definitely have pre-1988 calipers in that photo. Those calipers present NO END of problems in terms of adjustability. Good luck! I ripped out my 1984 rear calipers and upgraded at considerable expense because of various problems, such as unacceptable pedal travel, non-functioning emergency brake, etcetera. Nature smiled on me and rusted up the bleeder screw enough for it to break off in 1989, and I took the opportunity to upgrade.
If you can get your money back, do it.

thanks, I feel better now that I know whats going on. I can't use them as I have a '92 with the 28 spline axles and those do in fact have the 26 spline. Im just going to try and resell them on e-bay as the correct parts, not as the '91 parts I thought I was buying.
i would tell the guy you want your money back for selling you the incorrect year calipers that were in the title. its hard to tell from pics. you were counting on him to supply you the correct info. his mistake. if he bows up on you, leave neg. feedback and see if e-bay will help you(let you post for free) best of luck, Tom

Ebay has automatic $200 insurance on most all completed auctions, but there is a $25 deductible. So, if the guy doesn't make it right you can file a claim with eBay and get $175 back! Been there, done that. Good luck.
