Ball joint spinning, how/why is this happening???

So I am trying to swap my front springs so I took the wheel off and started compressing the spring. I then put a jack under the a-arm and started to jack it up. After that I attempted to remove the castle nut, as I did so, the ball joint and but started to spin togeather... So I have no way of getting the spring out now since I can't take the ball joint appart.

The car has no motor right now and it is up on jack stands.

Please help.

Take off the spring compressor and try to loosen (but DO NOT remove) the ball joint castle nut. The added pressure from the spring should keep the ball joint from spinning. If that doesn't work, use an impact gun.

Or put your jack under the control arm/joint and jack up on it to force the tapered ball joint shaft into the spindle.

or if all else fails, use a large c-clamp to pull the spindle down onto the balljoint and make it tighter. Or an impact gun should make short work of it.

I uncompressed the spring and the castle nut came right off with a wrench. Thanks guys.

Now I am welding reinforcments to my PA Racing A-arms and K-Member! Without the tips I would have been dead in the water all last weekend.

Glad you got it off without incident

For those not so lucky, this tool is a last resort

Do not try cutting the balljoint stuff with a saw. It is hardened extensively
