Re: third gen air shocks?

Air shocks are NOT "stock".

The guys in Engineering in the Shock Dept prolly had sense enough to look at the drawings of the chassis of these cars, and noticed that the Unibody Dept had given them NOTHING to attach a shock TO, except a hole through the floor pan sheet metal; and decided air shocks were a BAD idea. More so on these cars even than on just cars in general.

Which is most likely why NONE of these cars came with air shocks.

Just FYI, the reason they went to ATF, was most likely to get the last possible .001 mpg, to help out with meeting CAFE requirements. Gear oil works fine too. Not sure about "warranty" as a factor in that decision; these cars were pretty much all out of that 2 decades or so ago, IOW, before about half the people on this forum were born. Shouldn't be much of an issue any more.

Re: third gen air shocks?

Hmmm idk I tried to price out shocks for the rear of my car at napa last week and the only choice the computer gave was dreaded air shocks so I assumed they were stock.......but now that I think about it car quest said no such thing.....I just looked in my Chilton manual annnnnnd no air shocks?!? Im laughing in confusion why napas computer said that. I guess I will tell them if the want to make a sale dont try to sell me garbage.....ty 4 the correction ive only owned this car for four months so im still learning. ....any thoughts on removing the ecm? I haven't heard anything good yet about it but still researching here and there.

Re: third gen air shocks?

I'm not familiar with NAPA's listings for these cars, can't help you there.

Might want to check out Summit and Shock Warehouse and such places as that.

How would removing the ECM be "A Good Idea"?

clean up
That's what the quarter car wash is for. Hacking on it won't take care of the filth.

Moog is the biggest name in OE suspension, the low price is because of large quantity production.

Re: third gen air shocks?

awesome thank you for the info I did not know that. My problem with going oe is my rear end is currently not stock height and I like it that way so first comes money then springs then shocks just slowly doing research along with replacing other things first and I want to be making the best decision because im keeping this car forever.

Define "stock height". Because unless you can find original measurements from the road to the tops of the wheel openings, there's no way of knowing what stock really was after so many years of every original spring slowly sagging, every rubber isolator slowly settling and deteriorating, and so on. New Moogs made to original spec is a big step closer to original, but when using even the 5565s to replace sagged original rear springs, the result will look like you've lifted the rear of the car. 5665s are constant rate, the CC635s are progressive rate which explains the Cargo Carry prefix.
I see no benefit to be gained from going even higher than that, even if you can figure out a way.
