torque arm?
torque arm?
Hi all, have an '84 TransAM, originally a V6 car, now with a pretty stout 350. Original trans in the car didn't last too long behind this engine, now wanting to swap a TH350 trans in. Problem is the TH350 doesn't have the holes on the tail shaft to bolt up the torque arm. Is there some sort of aftermarket cross member or other work around for this that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Thanks.

If it were me, I'd stick with a 700R4 - they can handle all that your 350 is pushing, and have the 4th gear and locking converter for gas savings.
How did you leave the original V6 tranny in the car with a V8 motor? Bolt patterns don't line up between a 60 degree tranny and a 90 degree motor.

Re: torque arm?
When I bought the car it had been sitting a number of years with no engine. Was told by previous owner it was a V6 car, I don't really care what it had. I'm far from an expert on the car, all I care is that it's relatively clean and rust free.. If the 700R could handle all my 350 is pushing, I suppose it wouldn't have lost third gear .. likewise if I were concerned about fuel economy, I'd go buy a Honda.. Thanks for the link, that's plenty cheap enough.

Re: torque arm?
hes right, that 700R4 should handle your motor no prob. its the same as the later auto tranny hooked up to the ls1 motor. the 4l60e and the 700R4 are essentially the same.
Re: torque arm?
Ok well let me ask you this, I have a rebuilt 700r4 out of an 89 silverado 1500 pickup, will the tail shaft housing from the original trans swap onto that one to make it compatible with the torque arm? I'm aware the lockup O/D is electronically controlled on it.

Re: torque arm?
i belive its the same bolt patern and will bolt on to your tranny. all the bolt patterns on those were the same just had fatures like a spot for the torque arm to fit any aplication it was going into.
