Power Steering Filter
Anyone ever or currently using one of these aftermarket power steering filters? Was thinking about installing one on my car.

Re: Power Steering Filter
I'd figure it wouldn't hurt to have some filtering properties on the power steering fluid. It would go on the lower pressure return line which is easy to work with. Other car manufacturers use a filter for their power steering, why not ours? And besides, it wouldn't deviate from stock look as all I would have to do is replace that short piece of hose and i'm back to stock.

Re: Power Steering Filter
Not sure why this would be a good idea...
For an off-road Baja or Dakar racer, maybe; for one of these .... cars, it would be basically zero bang for LOTS of $$$$, and extra dead weight in a bad place to boot.

That's what I was thinking.. The necessity of this is probably zilch.

Re: Power Steering Filter
However, if you ever have a pump or steering box go bad, it's a good idea to install a filter in the system after repairing and/or replacing pieces. The filter then will collect up any trash left in the system by failed components.
Course the $2 filter that slips inside the return line (looks like an AC orifice) is adequate.

Re: Power Steering Filter
dont see the benefits... when I aqquired my 82 from the original owner 4 yrs ago it had approx 160k miles on it, the factory steering box was still great, tight and quiet.
In an off road vehicle exposed to much more dirt/dust etc.. maybe

Re: Power Steering Filter
On my old set up with the original power steering pump that came with the car and me being the second owner, I would not even consider it. But who knows how long the pump sat and I also converted to Red Line synthetic P/S fluid.

Re: Power Steering Filter
How is the red line synthetic working for you? I was thinking of putting Royal Purple synthetic PS fluid one of these days.. Any difference in noise / feel in the steering?

Re: Power Steering Filter
Originally I did hear some noise but that's because I didn't "burp" the system properly but went away after I did. As for steering response, it may be psychological, but yea, the steering seems to be more responsive.

Re: Power Steering Filter
I'm sure the synthetic is better.. I have a Lee 670 box that progressively got loose again (strange) but I was thinking about putting in new fluid when I re-install it.. I can't imagine synthetic fluid hurting anything.

Re: Power Steering Filter
It shouldn't. But with all synthetics, if there is a place to leak, it will with a hunger. LOL

Re: Power Steering Filter
ahh yes true.. Everything is new in my system so it should be all good. I'm just going to replace the hoses with stainless braided ones with an fittings for the extra security and peace of mind.

Re: Power Steering Filter
I need to get a new low pressure hose myself. It's the original and leaking a bit.

Re: Power Steering Filter
I just need to know where to get the hoses and which ones to get. Low on the priority list but I still want to do it eventually, actually I wanted to change all hoses to stainless braided for the look but mostly for the durability and peace of mind.
