Shocks & Struts

Getting ready to swap rears in the next week or so, wanted reviews of what you are useing and how you like them. I ordered the rear kit from Founders and now I need to add shocks and springs in the rear.

I agree with you if you are rich. Any suggestions for a person with lesser means?

Rich? Those shocks, you buy once and never again. Cheaper to buy 1 good set than a set of junk ones each year

if you're on a budget, the bang for buck setup most go with is KYB. They're no Koni or Bilstein, but they a better than pretty much everyone else in the price range.

Spend the money on shocks. Go cheap on everything else.

<--- Running Koni Yellows and STILL can't believe how well they work.

Re: Shocks & Struts

I don't think I'll ever be able to buy into the koni yellow hype personally. Until someone takes me for a ride in a car with something like KYBs or Tockicos and then changes the shocks out for Koni Yellows to prove how much better they are at least. I just can't see this part being that much superior for all the hype it gets.

I'd be willing to bet that a lot of the hype comes from people that have 20+ year old stock shocks and buy a set of koni yellows cause they are expensive so they must be good, and of course that is going to be a drastic improvement lol.

Not to break the bank...go with kYB GR2 front struts & kYB gas/adj rear shocks.

You haven't said what you want to do with the car. No point spending $ks on suspension if you're just cruising.

Re: Shocks & Struts

I will not be doing any road courses with it, the motor will be around 500 HP with the SC. I am sure it will see some 1/4 mile passes, but over all it will be a street car, the thing I love about the third-gen is the handeling. My first gen is fast and a great car as long as you are going strait. So I was looking to enhance that handeling and overall tight ride the third-gen has.

I second that. For a Daily Driver that can handle the roads good at legal speeds, and a bit more , I'd go with those. That is what I have, live out in the country & really enjoy some of the twisty roads out here. I've had autocross build cars before & these are a really better strut/shock choice for a Daily Driver car.

Re: Shocks & Struts

either go with kyb or monroe. go to rockauto and get them, like $136 for all 4 KYB gr2s. and about $97 to $98 for the monroe matic plus shocks and struts.

Always amazes me, people spending a lot of money on engine and bling but some $$$ for proper suspension and brakes is out of the question.....weird

Actually just ordered the Bilstein for the rear, got the BST sport that are for cars that are lowered since I am running new 1 inch drop springs. I will order the struts in a month or so when I move up to the front of the car. Thanks to all for the opinions, by the the way some of the KYB are as much or more than the Bilsteins. I found a site with good prices on Bilsteins, check it out http://www.shockwarehouse.com/index....cted_year=1991

Just found them $20 cheaper so the rear pair came in at $159.50 with free shipping http://www.eshocks.com/bil_veh.asp?M...tein&SubChar=Q

Okay, now what are the best lowering springs? whare you guys running out there? I have seen them as low as $139 and as much as $350 for a set like Hotchkins, any and all feedback is wellcome. And now as you know I am running the founders rear suspension kit along with Bilsteins.

It shouldn't be a surprise. The engine is easily displayed, sounds impressive and the power is easily demonstrated. Suspension not so much. Most people will do some burn outs, do a few stop light races and blow past some slow poke but most will never push their car anywhere near the limit cornering. OK is good enough.

My camaro is just a cruiser. I was thinking about going with the GR2 gas/adj combo above. Will that work with lowering springs or should I look at the bilstein rears?

Mine is just a cruiser too (with a little extra) & I'm riding low on Ground Control Weight Jacks & just have KYBs. I'm perfectly happy with it. Just stiff enough yet still give a good ride & no lady complaints.

Which Bilsteins did you get? I put 24-010214's on mine. Don't know how they ride yet; the car is still on jacks and will be for the time being.

I would say no. The aftermarket A-arms have fitment issues in a lot of cars. Don't seem to offer much in the way of benefits other than weight. The aftermarket K-member is a bit lighter. But it's weight down low and near the center of the car. In other words, a place where weight is not an issue. The stock pieces will last forever. The aftermarket pieces? Not as long.

Go for the Global West Del-A-Lum A-arm bushings if you want to make the front work well. Use those with the stock A-arms. Best of both worlds that way. They're even on sale right now.

Re: Shocks & Struts

Well I now have all the parts, just waiting on my sending unit for the tank, once I install the tank all this can go in. I am taking my 4th gen rear to my driveline guy for a freshening up (new bearings and such) I will let him put the Girdle on and than I can slap it all in. I picked up a Thre Rivers aluminum drive shaft for $70, not bad.

no not really. Just depends where the axle ends up after lowering. Sometimes you dont need it. However if you are cramming the widest tire possible in the back of the car, it can help greatly.
