whats this part?

Hey guys, sorry no pic right now i'll try and get one later. But whats the bar right behind my rear axle going from one side of the car to the other at an angle? Hopefully yall know what i mean cause i noticed mine is bent, also could this being bent cause the rear to shake at higher speeds like ive been experiencing?

Re: whats this part?

The bar between your axle and muffler? That's the Panhard Bar. Sometimes referred to as PHB. Many here have reported having a bent one. Fortunately they're fairly easy to change and upgrade. I've never had a bent one though, so I can't comment on the shaking.

What speed are you defining as high speed? The driveshafts in our cars are notorious for vibrating at high speed.

Re: whats this part?

Yep its the panhard bar, it starts shaking around 70, ive already replaced driveshaft with a balanced aluminum one, replaced worn out tie rods and front bearings then had front aligned and before this it used to shake at 40 mph , ive had new tires put on the front since ive owned it and i had them balanced the rears have weights on them but my next step was to have rear end aligned and the rear tires balance checked. But i just noticed the bent phb yesterday and think i should probably replace that before getting it aligned.

Re: whats this part?

Won't make the car "shake", but it WILL make it drive funny.

Like anything else, if you KNOW it's farkled, replace it before trying to troubleshoot anything else any further.

Re: whats this part?

If the car was curbed which would have bent the panhard bar, it may also have bent an axle or wheel.

Put both sides of the rear up in the air (tires off the ground). Start the engine and put the transmission into gear (1st gear for stick or auto).

From behind the car observe the tires/wheels. If one wobbles something is bent.

RBob.

Re: whats this part?

my 92 was curbed before i bought it, it had a bent panhard and a bent wheel. It had a vibration at high speed just like yours. The panhard was not an issue, but once the bent wheel was replaced, the vibration went away. I would check your rear wheels, most likely the passenger side one.

Re: whats this part?

I actually curbed my car once... slid sideways on a high-crowned driveway at a college parking lot on a patch of black ice at about 3 mph. Didn't think twice about it. But after that, I had BOTH the "shaking" AND a feeling that the car was "crabbing"; turned out, it had both bent the axle (flange no longer perpendicular to the shaft), AND bent the PHB. I was totally blown away that such a minor thing could cause so much damage. But there was no arguing with the proof.

So if your PHB is bent, it's not at all impossible that the same kind of thing has happened to your car; and you have NOT ONLY the bent PHB, BUT ALSO the bent axle. (or wheel)

Re: whats this part?

Well this will give me an excuse to get rid of the truck bullet hole rims that are on my car and im pretty sure they have the wrong offset anyways cause the front tires are stock size and they still rub when turning. Ive been wondering how these might look on my car http://www.jegs.com/p/Cragar/Cragar-...51048/10002/-1

Re: whats this part?

Before replacing the wheels in the hope that it will cure the problem, put the car up on jack stands UNDER THE AXLE TUBES - not under the frame, not under the pumpkin, not under ANYTHING ELSE besides THE AXLE TUBES - start it up, put it in gear, and watch for wheel wobbles. If one does, swap the wheels from side to side. If the wobble moves with the wheels, it's a bent wheel; if it stays, it's a bent axle. If they both wobble, get a set of known good wheels (the fronts maybe?) and repeat the test. If they both still wobble, both axles are bent.

Re: whats this part?

still havent got around to ordering a new bar yet, just wanted to know if the adjustable ones are necessary? I dont plan on doin any track racing or anything or weekly drag runs. Would i be fine with a non adjustable for ease of install and half the price?

If the rear end is centered within spec and you don't plan on lowering, an adjustable is unnecessary.
