stteering wheel flops around

ok, cars due for an inscpetion. but my steering wheel flops around like its nothing....three no turning play, it drives straight and dosnt wobble at any speeds, but stoped or driving the steergin wheel moves aorund freely, like it letraly can flop all over the place? the kid who has it before my rear ended someone btw. it had some play when i got the car, left right and up down. but then my tumbeler went. (airbag was deplyed in the accident) so while getting to the tumbeler i yanked out all the guts to the airbag. the BIG yellow ring and everything....i reassbeled the steering wheel without these parts and it flopped ALL over the damn place after that...was the big yellow ring some sort of guide also? did i breaks something? any ideas here guys? im lost. and know NOTHING about steering colmns....

Re: stteering wheel flops around

Can you be a little more specific, ie. is the wheel moving separately from the column or is it all moving together? Only thing I can think of is that the column nuts are loose(though your description sounds like its not this) or more likely, it sounds like your steering shaft is not securely attached. Go under the hood, find the steering box and start there looking for something loose or broken.

Re: stteering wheel flops around

sorry for the delay but i finaly figured it out. there is a bearing just below the spring that goes over the coulmn. turns out the steering whel post needs to be pulled out while the little coller needs to be banged into the bearing to compress it. then the spring needs to compress REALY far down to hold the thing in the bearing. the spring compress down to the second ring holds the thing in the bearing. so that was my problem. thanks guys.
THEY FIANLY GOT MY FAV. SMILEY BACK!!!! WOOHOO
