Steering column jammed

I am attempting to remove the steering column but the “D” coupling is jammed together. The intermediate shaft slides up and down freely and prohibits any force being applied to the column. Is the intermediate shaft supposed to move freely? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

The intermediate shaft is held to the lower column by a bolt. Remove it (as I'm sure you have) and, if necessary, spread the coupler a bit. The shaft should not slide freely under normal circumstances. There are some pics and removal instructions in the following link that may be helpful:

Re: Steering column jammed

Thank you, I have unbolted the column from the steering box. The intermediate shaft I believe is designed to collapse. The problem is that the intermediate shaft is damaged and slides up and down freely. This damage allows the intermediate shaft absorb any attempts to pull the two shafts apart. In my other Camaro the intermediate shaft does not slide freely. Any more suggestions would be appreciated.
