UMI New Product! 82-92 GM F-Body K-Member, Road Race
1982-1992 GM F-Body Tubular K-member, Factory Springs, Road Race
Applications:
Applications:
1982-1992 Chevrolet Camaro V8
1982-1992 Pontiac Firebird V8
Less weight plus high strength equals road race and auto-x success. UMI’s direct bolt-in replacement Road Race K-member instantly removes 20 lbs of front end weight from your ride and helps your existing horsepower work for you while providing a capable, high strength foundation. UMI’s RR k-member features strong dual tube construction as well as extra tubing and gusseting in critical areas. The K-member is fabricated from CNC machined 3/16” thick mild steel held together by a strong dual tube lower section. Factory clamshell and engine mounts bolt to the precision machined mounting pads while both factory and aftermarket suspension is located by strong boxed mounting points. Lightening holes are CNC machined into the mounting plates and the tubular construction provides added clearance for aftermarket exhaust. The modular design permits stock spring and strut use or simply remove the spring pockets and convert to coil-overs. Street and track testing on our test car has shown this K-member to be strong, reliable and a great upgrade for your high performance ride. Available in tough powder coated red or black finish. Manufactured with pride in Philipsburg, PA - USA
Features and benefits:
20 lbs lighter than stock k-member
Dual tube construction for superior strength (Industry leading!)
Four additional tubes plus two gussets in critical areas
Strong 3/16” thick mild steel engine & suspension mounts held together with 1-1/2” dia DOM tubing
CNC machined & jig-built for no hassle installation
MIG and TIG welded for clean looks & superior strength
Direct bolt-in design can be used with factory, UMI or other aftermarket a-arms as well as factory or aftermarket springs
Includes six new Grade 10.9 flanged mounting bolts
Durable red or black powdercoat
Modular design allows use of coil-overs and/or LS mounts for minimal cost
Manufactured with pride in Philipsburg, PA - USA
Note: This k-member will accept an LSX engine by purchasing motor mount adapters part # 2406. When using an LSX engine factory LS A/C needs relocated when running a UMI tubular k-member. We recommend an A/C relocation kit from www.kwikperf.com.

Re: UMI New Product! 82-92 GM F-Body K-Member, Road Race
Please make it compatible with the factory LSx AC compressor.
Just a slight tweak & you are there.
More people could afford the k-member if they did not have to buy a new AC setup.

Re: UMI New Product! 82-92 GM F-Body K-Member, Road Race
Does it allow the use of the factory front triangle braces?
How low is the main bar in relation to a factory oil pan?
Thanks,
John

You only mention V8s. V6 guys want to lose even more weight too. Any fitment issues?

Re: UMI New Product! 82-92 GM F-Body K-Member, Road Race
It does use the triangular braces, since its a 'road race autox' piece, its nice to keep all the bracing, even if it costs you ac fitment for the lsx guys.
The lower crossbars are about as low as the stock k-member, which is nice, no loss in ground clearance. The bar is dead nuts even with the bottom of my v6 pan, whic should be about the same as the standard v8 pan.
I installed one of these in my 92 v6 car earlier this year, I'm working on the write up, but life has been busy and work is killing me, so finding time to finish it is hard. Hopefully soon.

Re: UMI New Product! 82-92 GM F-Body K-Member, Road Race
Fits a v6 just fine, but you have to make adapters for the motor mounts since the kmember does not have the v6 motor mount provisions. I made a set, and have pics. Pretty simple, but takes some work. The removable spring perches are nice, I made my own to work with my weight jack setup, keeping the bolts up and through the frame.

Re: UMI New Product! 82-92 GM F-Body K-Member, Road Race
Yes sir, they do. We make them for the 5.0L engine, it would be a direct bolt in with no modifications. They work with factory a-arms as well. Below is non-road race version for your vehicle if you would like to look:
Part #2401- http://www.umiperformance.com/catalo...roducts_id=623
If you have any questions please ask. Thanks!

Re: UMI New Product! 82-92 GM F-Body K-Member, Road Race
Hmm my motor is out again and i have been considering kmember for more room. Any pics of this along side a stock kmember and a arm setup to show differences?
My turbo setup clears stock kmember so i should have no problem with tubular.
Think it will hold solid motor mounts and 1000-1100 hp?

Re: UMI New Product! 82-92 GM F-Body K-Member, Road Race
Ramey emailed me if I could get at least ten orders they may be able to do something. Orr, will you be going with the RR unit? By the looks of the construction, Im sure the 1000 is doable. Really good construction by far of any k member ive seen for our years. Im basically looking for clearance , but theweoght savings is a plus. Suscrib so we can keep on top of this.
Mods... Let us know if it is ok to garner intrest here the if need be move this over to the gp forum. Thank you

I'm liking the looks of this unit. I will just have to make some adapters for the big block Buick I plan on using.

Re: UMI New Product! 82-92 GM F-Body K-Member, Road Race
I might be in. I need to know if the main under oil pan hoop is in the same location as the spohn kmember.
My turbo setup clears a spohn setup. Hate to buy this road race one and have issues.

Re: UMI New Product! 82-92 GM F-Body K-Member, Road Race
From my perspective looking at both manufactures pics it seem the umi's has more of a loop, u shape, than the spohns unit, which looks like a straight shot cross bar welded in at a little bit lower point than umi's. Thats what i see from the pics, but im sure umi can chime in here as im sure they reserched all competitors units before designing there own. Give em a ring tm, its the last day. Hell of a deal on the rr unit after discount and the bargain shipping.
Off hand btw, what is making you consider the switch since you have one already? Heard of hit or miss problems with spohns k members in searched posts here, but seems not anything negative about Umis design, especially the rr unit which seems to be a heavy duty piece. Take care.

That was a bonehead decision to make a tubular K-member for LSx swaps that can't be used with factory AC compressor brackets. Get it right. Understand the voice of customer.

I suggest reading the magazine articles hosted on TGO, as well as the Sticky's in this chassis/suspension forum.

You can order that package via phone already. You'd just specify you wanted the RR instead of the standard k. It would be P/N 240731.
thanks

Re: UMI New Product! 82-92 GM F-Body K-Member, Road Race
Lol, couldnt believe the size difference when you actually get them side by side. Def alot of excess metal on the stocker. Umis piece is a gem. Im just prepping my mout areas and retouching the paint there. Btw TTOP350 didnt you tell me in the motor mount thread your car came with two drivers side clamshells factory? Im thinking of throwing the es mounts back in and its a breeze to swap things out with the umi setup compared to the factory nightmare.

Thanks ramey for the quick reply. Do you know if in the near future you guys will be workingon that? I really dont want to mix and match my suspension components.

That rack mount isn't on an official list yet but it may be someday. If the requests pile up, we move projects up to the front...

Ramey ,
Any chance UMI will be offering the triangle pieces that brace subframe and k member? I know some cars didnt come factory with them and in the bone yards, at least around here they are usually bent ot dmaged beyond use. Thank you
