Steering bind

I recently installed the GM solid steering shaft (great product by the way), and I love how it feels. The driving feel is much better than with my old shaft. However, when I parked my car today, I noticed a very small bit of bind in the steering wheel. At the 12 position, where there is a tiny bit of play, it would bind up then move. I did replace the column bushing with the Astrovan bushing. It doesn't seem like it's the box. I really can't figure it out.

I've uploaded a video. When you see the shaft not moving, I'm still moving the steering wheel a bit.

Re: Steering bind

You video is kindof hard to see the shaft real well but it appears it is a single pivot shaft you put on there? If so then there is your problem. There is alot of crap postings going around where people do things out of junkyard parts with retrofits and such and people don't understand the geometry of stuff as well as tolerances between cars of the same production line.

Your steering wheel shaft coming out of the firewall is fixed position.-Check- your steering box spline angle is a fix position-check- Do those line up? Not always. in fact it is quite common they do not.

You have now taken off the flexible ragjoint with is laterally soft and has just a tad bit of give, and you replaced it with a single pivot non flexible joint that that has no lateral give in the case of misalignment. Its the same reason the UE rag joint replacement soild disk does the same exact thing.

What do you need? A steering shaft with a double pivot. There is a post on here that shows the parts you can buy to assemble one from Summit racing- Otherwise its best to put the stock shaft back on there with a new ragjoint disk.

Re: Steering bind

No, it's a double pivot. There is a u-joint both at the steering column and at the box.

Then the box is getting bad with a worn flat spot on the worm gear. Boxes are getting hard to come by. most have issues with them even when you buy a rebuilt one. Lee used to be reputable, but it seems that people are even having trouble with his boxes now (I believe Hellwingz is having issues with a Lee box. AGR is crap- don't buy them. I have had two issues with AGR)
The only other thing is the Ujoint pivots on the shadft you used are worn or damaged maybe? Do you swivel them before install with pressure against them to see if they were smooth?

My opinion would be the box is showing an issue. You will not notice it with the rag joint becasue it has give. The new shaft you are using is solid and more percise so a deadspot in the box will show more prominant.

Just a side note: Tom Lee has medical issue and is not all together anymore. His self proclaimed words is he has "Sometimers". My first hand experience with him is that it is alot more advanced then that. Sad because he was good at what hie did. Another old school professional that the world is loosing.

Re: Steering bind

That's no good . This Lee box has maybe 3,000 miles of light driving on it. Is it possible I installed the astro van bushing incorrectly? Could that bind up? I reexamined it, and it can only go one one way.

Sorry, I added more in my last post. Yes the box probably has issues- sorry to hear that. I am assuming you got it within the last two years. Last I talked with him was about 4 years ago and he was not all together then even.

To be honest with you I have no clue who to turn to now. The last box I got was from Lee.

I know Jerrywho(Jerry meyers- one of our So Cal locals and ex sprint car racer) went to a new 10:1 Delphi box like they use in the NASCAR cup cars in his Camaro but I know he has to two hand that wheel since its so quick ratio. I watched him in it at Adams and he also said it personally to me that he has trouble one handing it as he shifts. Might wantto check and see what Box he retrofitted and how he did it- and most importantly if they make a 12-1 to 14-1 range option.

Other than that- I would poersonally try cntacting Sweet manufaturing. they are pricy, but they make good stuff.

Re: Steering bind

I figured it out today. Apparently. I didn't torque the the coupler at the steering shaft enough. It was moving around a bit and binding.

Re: Steering bind

So you have a Lee box and it's fine now?

ps. after adjusting the top adjuster on my Lee box it is much better but not perfect. I'll see if I can adjust it more without it binding to be even better. And I got mine in 2010.
