Steering Partially Broke

I'm not to car savy but here is the jist of it.

Steering wheel doesn't lock into place and it seems like something important has been snapped off. You can turn the key but it won't do anything unless you bend the steering wheel down (Which I'm guessing is the original position so the stuff lines up.)

Sometimes if I pull to hard and it bends down it will cut the car off.

Could someone give me some advice? Could I just replace the whole steering column (Is it called?) Is that a complicated install? Also any estimate of the cost to fix something like this?

But besides listed above it turns fine and starts (As long as its in the right position.)

Video if anyone is curious.

Re: Steering Partially Broke

That's an interesting one. You could pull the steering column apart and look for a broken switch or something messed up with your ignition cylinder, but, if you have a junkyard with a donor column fairly close to you it'd be cheaper and quicker to just swap out the whole column. IMO. It's a pretty easy swap to do, just look up a diagram of how everything hooks up.

Moving the steering wheel like that shouldn't make the car die...w/out knowing more it seems like something is up with the ignition cylinder, but I can't say for sure.

Yeah. I don't know to much about this and it works right now. I'll screw with it once It botheres me more.

The previous people who owned this... Its unreal how they treated the car then before they sold it they figured they'd spray paint the whole thing and covered partvof the tires trim windows logos, not to mention a million other things.... But I'm learning alot in the process so its worth it to me even if its a money sink.

Most of these cars that I've seen start out as a "money sink" but, if you call it a hobby instead it makes it sting a little less while buying parts lol. they're great to learn on and if you stick with it you'll be a gearhead by the time you're done making the car your own.

Oh yeah. Never give up a camaro. IMO best looking car ever made. Just a bit Outta my league with some things wrong but its a good way to learn. That and I'm always so short on funds.

Re: Steering Partially Broke

A couple ways to look at it is, Can't break it if its already broke. Pull it and see if you can fix it.

Steering columns are fairly easy to pull and install. Locate a replacement steering column and what it costs. Then pull yours, try to repair it. If you can't, go get the replacement and bolt that baby in.

I've done several steering columns in several makes and models. I haven't done one in a thirdgen yet but trust me when I say they are all very similar.

Ok.

Well it works fine. You just have to bend it down to get it back the place its supposed to be so when you turn the key it moves this piece on the left.

I just don't wanna pull it off and have it be worse or not be able to get it on.

I'll update the thread when I do get to that though. Just gotta wait till I get a bit more money.
