Hello, I have a 1986 iroc. The under body is in great shape, but most of they suspension/drivetrain is pretty rusty. I am trying to get it back to a factory clean look so I was wondering what kind of paint/coating i should use. Maybe black por 15 semi gloss? Anyways, I would really appreciate any advice! Por-15 is a common suspension paint for rust prevention.

POR is great for items that are already rusted. Just don't use it on clean, shiny metal. It can peel right off.

 

Clean, new metal yes. POR 15 works great on bare metal that has been blasted, sanded, or etched.

 

I see people put it on over painted things to.
I just remember it flaking off of my bro-n-laws truck when he put some on a painted surface. People still argue with me and do it anyway.

 

I won't argue... Don't put por15 over paint, it will eventually peel off.
An alternative to POR 15 is to use a rust converter, then a high solids paint like Eastwood chassis black. Properly applied POR 15 will last longer.

 

Properly prepped and etched, no problem with POR but by the time you've done that the chassis black (or another high solids semi) will look better IMO. And you can clean your gun when you're done...

I may have seen too many 'builds' where the entire under car was brushed with POR.
