Stock rear end prices

I have a stock disc brake rear end out of a 85 Z. Just wondering what it's worth ? Its complete and other than cleaning up and repainting its ready to go. Not sure what gear is it. Any ideas what people have been paying for them?

Welcome to TGO, Badjuju.

The gear ratio will often have some determination of value. For example, a 3.73 ratio will certainly be more desirable than, say, a 3.08. That said many members won't be fond of the Delco-Moraine rear calipers.

I'd check ratio first.

Best of luck,

Re: Stock rear end prices

How many bolts are on the diff cover? Could you get a 9 bolt in the z in 85? I snagged a 9 bolt from an 85 trans am a few weeks ago for $80 on a half off day at Pick N Pull. Unless it's a particularly rear part I try to price things I sell at whatever pick n pull would normally sell them for. I'd price it at a fill rear end disc to disc minus the calipers. They are famous for failing, so most likely someone will be rebuilding or replacing them anyhow.

I bought my rear for 80, then spent 160 on brand new calipers and pads.

James I agree on the ratio deal. I have one 87 car that's a full racecar. This 85 is going to be a street strip car. I plan on putting a 9 inch under it but kinda hate to scrap the factory rear. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Stock rear end prices

Gear ratio plays a big role but as a gen. idea here are my prices on complete rear ends
10 bolt rears.
Drum brake open rears $250 with a little room to play on the price.... Posi add $100
Disk brake open rear ends $400 with a little room to play on price ... Posi add $100

Not very many in my local junk yards anymore, but when does turn up they want $300 and up... Last time I checked prices was $300 for open drum rear, $425 for posi drum rear, $475 for open disk rear and $625 for posi disk

Re: Stock rear end prices

If I woke up one morning and found that rear in my driveway, I'd pay somebody to come haul it off.

Granted, I'm a bit more crusty and a curmudgeon than most; but that's what it'd be worth to me. Some negative number.

OTOH yerbasic streetstroke is gonna drool all over himself about those "disc brakes". Most people, especially the inexperienced ones, don't realize that in stock form, they do even less than drums. So, what it's "worth" to ME, is quite a bit different from what it's "worth" to THE GREATER FOOL. And yes, if I had to write back home and reveal my most unchanging observation about the illogical life forms on this planet that call themselves "intelligent", it would be that there is ALWAYS at least one "greater fool" among them, no matter how great of a fool you think you've already found.

So go find em!! They're out there. CL is your friend.

Rear end complete disc type for a rough idea, about 190. Regardless of gears, open diff, or posi.

Yes true, but how many is in the pick n pull yard? Like I said before it's hard to find these cars in junk yards now and when you do they are picked clean.

My pull a part junkyard has these prices listed
REAR END W/DRUMS $93.50 $15.00 core
REAR END W/O DRUMS $77.50 $15.00 core
REAR END, DISC BRAKE TYPE (COMPLETE) $135.75 $26.75 core

But here are the F bodies they have in..
CHEVROLET CAMARO 1997, date on yard 7/31/2015, row 48
PONTIAC FIREBIRD 1995, date on yard 8/6/2015, row 50
PONTIAC FIREBIRD 1999 date on yard 7/14/2015, row 69
PONTIAC FIREBIRD 1997, date on yard 7/11/2015, row 68

So yeah, no third gens and only 4 4th gens

And with that pull a part yard, I would say at bare min 10,000 people pass through it per week. The odds are against you getting a $100 F body rear end at my local pull a part

Re: Stock rear end prices

Clean it up, paint it, and list it for $200-$300if the posi is good and you are serious about moving it. Any more and you'll probably be holding it for a long time. At least near me you would be.

Plus your forgetting that 4th gen rears will bolt in our cars and have in all likely hood less miles.

Re: Stock rear end prices

Gotta find the right customer. Someone who just wants a stock replacement for their stock car. Anybody looking for performance would pretty much pass that over, as it is a poor year for any kind of performance, 26 spline axles are weaker than the later years 28 splines, and as mentioned before early disc brakes are worse than factory drums in every possible way.

I got a pre 90 posi rear with Delco discs and I literally threw every single piece in the scrap pile except the houseing.

I just wanted a disc brake housing to bolt a new style set of discs onto, as my original housing had drums & the brake flanges are different.

Re: Stock rear end prices

I'm looking at a rear end from a 91 firebird with a 350 TPI at a junkyard in my area. They want $150 which I am considering doing if they will pull it out for me without damaging it. It is a 3.23 gear ratio with drums. I called Chevy to confirm it too.
Before I was in the market for rear ends, there were always a few on crsigslist in my area for $40-$80 complete. No idea ratios I just knew they were 3rd gens. So when they do show up in my area they are cheap but right now, I don't think there is a single 3rd gen rear end on craigslist here.
