Strut Problems?

So last night I was driving around with my friend and we both noticed that my passenger front corner of the car seemed lower than my driver side. I took a look at it and using my phone as a reference, (amazing and precise tool I know) I noticed the gap between the top of the tire and the wheel well seemed to be about an inch shorter. I'm not knowledgeable on suspension, but if I had to guess its my strut that is going out. Does that seem like a logical guess or is there something else in the suspension that can cause that?

Another question I have is I went ahead and looked at Rockauto to see what they have available for my year and was wondering if anyone had any experience with any of these struts. I am curious if the KYB 735001 AGX's are any good as an upgrade? I've always liked the cushion that my Firebird had but had moments where I hated it due to bad corning ability. Adjustable struts seem like they would be a good solution to this but once again I have no clue when it comes to suspension.

Here's the link to the list of struts. Hopefully it makes it easier.

Re: Strut Problems?

Fenders are NOT the way to measure the car. That would be about like deciding whether your house foundation was level, by looking at the pictures on the wall and seeing if they hung straight.

Measure THE ACTUAL CAR. That would consist of, the "frame" and the K-member. Wherever THEY are, is where THE CAR is. If THE CAR is right but THE FENDER is off, adjust the fender. If THE CAR is off, ... then that's a different matter.

Struts don't hold the car up. Springs do. If THE CAR isn't level, you need springs.

Not saying "your struts are OK"; not saying "you don't need struts"; not saying "don't buy struts"; not saying "those struts are [blah blah blah] buy struts [blah blah blah] instead"; not saying "struts won't do any good"; only saying, struts WILL NOT fix a problem caused by springs, such as the car not sitting level.

Replace the springs. Adjust the fenders correctly. (same "height" on both sides, once THE CAR is the same height on both sides FIRST) Consider buying struts that match your springs and replacing them at the same time. BUT... replacing struts alone, WILL NOT make your car sit "level", by ANY measure you care to apply, except by pure accident.

pretty sure there are no springs in the front, just the struts. Not 100% sure though as I've never really paid attention to the setup there. Most of the suspension stuff I deal with is in big trucks and has UCAs and LCAs. This is very different.

As far as I know there is no real frame to measure off of? From what I know about cars, unibodies like this have the frame underneath the body. Damn I feel clueless. What is a "K member?"

Re: Strut Problems?

Pretty sure there ARE springs in the front. (although if one is missing, that would account for that side sitting low) Might be a good idea to pay some attention to what's in there.

There's a K-member, and there's the parts of the car that it bolts to. The actual STRUCTURE of the car. The fender is just a sheet of tinfoil stretched over all that to tart it up a little bit.

The K-member is the main piece under the front of the car. The engine sits on it and the control arms bolt to it.

Struts are just like shocks in a 2-arm setup. They damp the motion of the parts. They DO NOT hold the car up.
