1982 Z28 Steering

Question for the experts. It's been about 30 years since I drove an '82 Z28 and I don't remember the steering being as easy as a Buick. On my '82, the wheel turns 2.5x lock-to-lock so I have the quick ratio box, but the feel is so light. My IROC-Z, is much tighter and any movement of the wheel can change the vehicle direction.

Did the '82 have a real easy power steering? The pump was replaced about a year ago, when my dad had the car, but it seems too easy compared to what I'm used to.

Any way to "tighten" up the feel or is this the way it was? Thanks

Re: 1982 Z28 Steering

There are different torsion bars in the boxes that determine the assist available, and I don't believe the high effort "HX" boxes were available until a few years in (_I think_ they were only available in boxes with 16" wheel stops in them, so that would mean >84).

My '83 had a quick ratio box in it and I don't remember it being as heavy as either of my '87's with HX boxes in them (a Formula 350 and a TA), but the one that I'm currently driving, the TA has a smaller than stock steering wheel in it which makes the heavier steering really noticeable.
