Front End/Steering Check

Hi Everyone,
Is there a write up or a previous thread on how to check the steering/suspension parts of our cars? I have a 1989 Camaro and want to check the ball joints, tie rods, steering components, i.e. basically everything for safety. I seem to have a slight wander when I am driving and not sure where to look first. I did have someone move the steering wheel while I looked under the car. I did not notice any movement between the joints. I have a chilton book but it doesn't say much on checking all this...

so if there is a thread or a write on how to check for all these safety checks like a state inspection mechanic would do, would like to review and follow it.

thanks in advance.

Re: Front End/Steering Check

Ball joints: jack the control arm up with a floor jack under the spring about 2½". Put about a 4' 2x4 under the tire. Have your assistant raise and lower the tire w/ the 2x4 while you watch the BJ. (ball joint, you perv) If it moves more than about ... the least you can see, replace it.

Tie rods, steering components, etc. etc. etc.: drive the car up on ramps. Have your assistant shake the steering wheel from side to side while you get up under it and watch each joint. If ANY part moves without making the next part move along with it, it's FORNICATED. Replace it.

Can't speak to anything about "state inspector"; I'm in the private sector, and have been all my life, therefore I'm all about REALITY as opposed to "The Rules". I'm pretty sure though, most of those welfare-to-work types (think "TSA") will wave you on through if your s*** looks like it's at least halfway taken care of, and you're not an a**hole to them, and there's no obvious reason for them to turf you.

I was in A-town this past week. On Chew St near 15th. Where are you?

Re: Front End/Steering Check

Checking in from Mobile, AL! I used to live up in Schuylkill Haven, Pa haha I can't say I miss it. Anyway, I thought I'd shoot this out there - I have an 89 GTA and may have slid it into a granite curb down here about a decade ago. It's not my daily anymore and is more garaged than anything, but I noticed that it turns further left than right. I replaced the tie rods, shocks, and ball joints but it's still doing it. Any suggestions on where to check?
