drum to disk time

Ok. I have gotten great info from this club. I am planning to retro an 85 drum rear with the same era disk setup. I have the axle shafts and all the parts including pro valve, e- brake cables, stock A50 master from my drum rear and all. I have moved to Texas a year ago and don't have any connections to reliable salvage yards. So I am going to try to use the stock rear case. I have looked at the mounts for the calipers. The drum axle casting needs to be cut down below the cillinder mount. The holes that would br drilled for the backing plates are narrow on one end. Wider on the other. Does the narrow end mount on the bottom or the top of the axle. I also see that there is just enough clearence for the wider holes to be drilled into the axle housing. Has anyone attempted this feat with success before? If so let me in on the secrets.

The '82-'88 rear disc setup is not very good. It has always been a source of problems. I would suggest replacing the entire rear with an '89-'92 rear disc assaembly. Those brakes are much better.
