Anyone ever changed the fuel tank and had a step by step or advice? Never done it before. 84z 305. Thank you.

Re: Fuel tank change

There are some threads on tank R&R on the Tech / General Engine board here. Some go into detail on what is required.

Re: Fuel tank change

Not a step by step procedure, but I will hit the main points.

Need the car raised... Quite a bit to get clearance to lower it out.

Unscrew filler neck over and such at gas cap.

Lower the rear axle assembly (needed for clearance).

Unbolt muffler/exhaust to drop and give clearance.

Disconnect fuel lines at fuel filter region. I think it is 4 lines total.

Unplug wiring harness that goes to fuel sending unit/fuel pump.

2 bolts in the tank straps actually hold it in place.

I can try scanning the instructions from my manual later, if you want.

If you don't have a lift available, and are working on the floor under the car, probably the toughest part of the job will be raising the car up high enough---and then safely supporting it there---so you can maneuver the tank out from under the car.

It should go without saying to install all new in-tank fuel system components while the tank is out.

I agree with the height part. You need the car higher than you might initially think. When dropping the tank, you will lower the passenger side a lot, but the fuel neck will still be restricted by items heading towards the quarter panel. If these cars had a fuel neck that would disconnect at the tank like some other cars, then you might get away without even jacking up the car. That LONG fuel neck is what makes it difficult.
