All of the hardware came loose out of the box, I backed it out, put some locktite on it and put better grease in the shaft itself.
The steering wheel side did not fit the shaft on the car. I had to use a small sand wheel to bore it out a bit. This took about 5 minutes and then it fit fine.
The steering box side, they suggest you flatten the spot where the stop bolt hits, but I ignored that part.. it already has splines, you just need the stop bolt to hold it from moving in and out. Loctite it and tighten it.. it won't go anywhere.
All in all.. once I bored the steering wheel side, it fit well.
My rag joint wasn't terrible, but it was definitely more loose than the solid shaft.
Overall I'm happy with my $100 saved.. now I'll put that towards some knock off rear hatch hinges. lol
At $50, that painted "Holley" knockoff is about $100 cheaper than Holley's painted "Detroit Speed" knockoff, which is about $150 cheaper than Detroit Speed's unpainted Borgeson brand.
BTW, the splined end coming out of the steering box has a flat side. If you couldn't see yours, then it was upside down, but it should be on top, so hopefully your wheels and steering wheel are straight.
I don't see why it wouldn't, it seems pretty solid to me. Wish I had another to compare side by side!

lol I didn't even know Detroit made one.. wild how much they mark this stuff up.. they're all probably made in the same, if not very similar machine shops as well.
As for the flat spot, mine was up top, but the one on the solid shaft is on the side, so it's 90 degrees off. There's no way to make it work unless you were to maybe turn the wheel 90 degrees, remove the wheel from the and then align it again. Too much work for not enough reward for me, at the moment at least. lol
I just got and installed the Borgeson 000315 this past weekend and it went together with zero trouble or modifications. Way better than the questionable repo OE style i-shaft i got a few years ago. At $50 though I'd be real nervous about losing power assist at low speed and having the u-joints they use explode.

Time will tell.. $280 is nuts for a steering shaft. lol

Big difference from stock to the borgeson steering shaft? Been thinking of upgrading but that price is STEEP lol

I can't really tell how much the difference is real vs psychological, but it seems like road feedback is much more prominent. The main reason I did it was because the Borgeson isn't keyed on the gearbox end and I was chasing a steering wheel clocking issue. I also installed Spohn Bump steer kit at the same time so not a fair A/B comparison.
Is the price justified for what it is, I would say so. It's a solid, high quality piece and the u-joints they use are very precise with zero play. Is it worth double what classic et. al. are charging for the stock style repo job, absolutely.
I gotcha… thanks for the info! My 87 GTA is just a street type ride, no tracking or anything so I’m always debating wether an upgrade will really be used or not if I’m not tracking the car. I just want the best possible OEM+ type nice ride 😎
Holley's version is priced between the ebay product and the Detroit Speed/Borgeson product, and it's likely closer in quality to the Detroit Speed product than the ebay product, so it's got that going for it.
Holley owns Detroit Speed now, so it's clear to see why the two products are so similar. But DS only agreed to let Holley buy them IF Holley minded its own business and stayed out of DS's, so DS still governs itself.
I got that info from Detroit Speed, when, one day I was put on hold by Holley, and my call got accidentally transferred to DS lol. He had no idea what I was calling about, or how my call ended up going to him, but while I had him on the phone, I asked him if Holley was destroying them like they've been destroying all of the other brands they've purchased and own, and that's what he told me. DS was happy to accept Holley's funding, but they still had to remain independent to protect their brand. It was like, ok, thank you, Holley, but keep out!
