Are the red head steering gears truly dead zone free? Anyone actually running one currently? They claim, Quote: "we guarantee no play in our gearboxes"
I've tried a local steering shop rebuilding my original awhile ago but still had dead zone along with other problems. Don't think the guy did a good job.
I've currently have an ACDelco remanufactured on the car but it has dangerous dead zone on the highway.
The front end is completely rebuilt INCLUDING the hard to do inner control arm bushings. Car has been professionally aligned by a shop that specializes in classic car alignments and I run the Borgeson universal based shaft (awesome part)
Just feels like this auto part / local shop stuff is junk but would love to hear from some who has a red head in their ride.
I've had a 12.7:1 readhead box I was happy with.
They are local so I go to tour their shop in Auburn WA. Down the street from the Boeing plant I used to work at.
But here's the thing
No steering box system will have zero play.
It's impossible with that many links.
Even my $3,000 turn 1 8:1 box has top center play on it.
I don't consider it dangerous. I'm blasting down the straight at 149mph questioning if my Wilwood brakes will stop me in time for turn 2.
I have a Borgeson box and steering shaft w no rag joint and every steering component is new. It is great. Like much better than stock. Usually rebuild boxes aren't great. I've heard complaints about every rebuild company. The auto parts store rebuilds are usually terrible. The Borgeson box is all new. Does the car drive like a Porsche? Nope, but it's much better than the 80s pos it felt like. No matter what, there's a dead zone in the center. But now it's minimal. It's confidence inspiring at high speed.
