Torque Arm Removal
Torque Arm Removal
Posted this in the transmission section, but maybe the knowledge is here. I need to remove the trans from my 88 GTA, so obviously the torque arm has to be disconnected from the trans & maybe removed totally to get the trans out. Anyhow, the factory shop manual says the rear springs need to be removed before removing the torque arm in order to prevent binding or incorrectly positioning the rear axle housing. The question is: do the rear springs need to be removed when disconnecting or removing the torque arm? If so, can the rear spring removal only be done when REINSTALLING the torque arm. I really need to roll the car out of the garage after I pull the trans.
Thanks, FJK

When you remove the torque arm, the diff will want to roll up. You can put the torque arm back on after you remove the tranny and let it hit against the floor. This will keep the diff and springs in place while you push it around.

I had all four wheels of the ground with the springs still in when I removed my torque arm and had no problems removing it. Just removed the two bolts on the rear and pulled it out of the trans mount. My mount was old so you may not be able to do that to yours.
