rear brake flex hose bulletin
i noticed that theres a rear brake flex hose service bulletin recall for my 84, the description is cut off, whats the full description, IE the problem ? how much is the new flex hose and is it worth taking the car to a dealership to have the hose replaced or should i just do it myself ?
i called the dealer about the seatbelts TSB's but there are three of them, and they dunno which one is for the release button issue, why are there three bulletins for the belts ? which is what ? the dealer doesnt want ot help me very much, IE they wont try very hard to find out anytihng, they want me to get the part numbers for the belt latch release parts, anyone know them ?? or for the rear flex hose ?
http://www.alldata.com/TSB/10/841002HC.html
ideas comments suggestions ?
hopefully some others can learn some good info from this also
thanks for anything

You don't need a service bulletin #, you need the recall work done. Find another dealer, and tell them to run your VIN for the seatbelt RECALL.
From looking at the site, it looks like they'd go by "AM9154, Safety Campaign 90C22(C) Reissue Notice," but don't tell them about it. They should be able to dig it up. If they can't, then tell them. If they still can't, call someone important at GM.
It also looks like the rear hose is also a Recall, not a TSB. (A TSB tells a mechanic how to fix a common problem, it's different than a recall.) So that means your rear hose should get fixed for free, too. 'Course, you can do the rear hose yourself, it's not that bad, your problem would be fighting "rusted solid" brake fittings from 1984. The bitch is when the brake line fitting rusts to the brake line- the fitting starts to turn, but it takes the brake line with it, and snaps the end of the brake line off. Then you're off to an autostore to find a new pre-flared brake line, and a brake line bender. (Tip- 84-up metric rear fittings are a 1.0mmx10 fitting, and on Raybestos pre-flared lines, that's in the "Import/Foreign car" brake line rack, with light blue fittings. I just bought a 60" line, 3/16" outside diameter, for $2.50 to repair a crushed rear brake line.)
Oh- you can also buy new rear lines from http://www.classictube.com - but you will cry if you break the fitting off for the front-of-car-to-rear-of-car brake line!!! Use LOTS of penetrant, over a few weeks of time.

Product Safety Campaign 84C19 Rear Brake Center Flex Hose May F
Number: 84C19
Section: 5
Date: September, 1984
Subject: PRODUCT SAFETY CAMPAIGN 84C19
REAR BRAKE CENTER FLEX HOSE MAY FAIL
Model and Year: 1984 CHEVROLET CAMARO MODELSTO: ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS
The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, as amended, provides that each vehicle which is subject to a recall campaign of this type must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the owner has tendered it for repair. A failure to adequately repair within 60 days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time.
If the condition is not adequately repaired within a reasonable time, the owner may be entitled to an identical or reasonably equivalent vehicle at no charge or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation.
To avoid having to provide these burdensome solutions, every effort must be made to promptly schedule an appointment with each owner and to repair their vehicle as soon as possible. As you will see in reading the attached copy of the letter which is being sent to owners, the owners are being instructed to contact the nearest Chevrolet Zone Office if their dealer does not remedy the condition within five days of the agreed service date. If the condition is not remedied within a reasonable time, they are instructed on how to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
DEFECT INVOLVED
General Motors has determined that some rear brake center flex hoses used on certain 1984 Chevrolet Camaro models fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 106-74 (brake hoses). These hoses were ground undersized at time of manufacture. As a result these hoses might separate from the end fittings when subjected to the pull force required by the FMVSS 106-74 tensile strength test.
Such a separation would result in a loss of brake fluid and a partial loss of braking action. Because these vehicles are equipped with a dual braking system, part of the system will remain functional allowing the vehicle to be stopped but over a greater distance. Should a partial loss of braking action occur while the vehicle is in motion at a time when minimum stopping distances are required, a vehicle crash could occur without prior warning.
DEALER ACTION
Dealers are to replace the rear brake center flex hose on all involved vehicles, per the instructions outlined in the campaign bulletin.
VEHICLES INVOLVED
All 1984 Chevrolet Camaro models within the following vehicle parameters:
Plant From Through
Norwood EN139186 EN145987
Van Nuys EL156084 EL171132
Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Computer listings contain the complete Vehicle Identification Number, owner name and address data, and are furnished to the involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign.
These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin was not shipped any involved vehicles.
OWNER NOTIFICATION
Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by Chevrolet Motor Division (see copy of Owner Letter included with this bulletin).
DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.
Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.
Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.
This bulletin is notice to you that the new motor vehicles included in this campaign may not comply with the standard identified above. Under Sections 108 and 114 of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, it is illegal for a dealer to sell a new motor vehicle which the dealer knows does not comply with an applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard. As a consequence, if you sell any of these motor vehicles without first performing the campaign correction, your dealership may be subject to a civil penalty up to $1,000 for each such sale.

good stuff ! yeah the dealer here isnt know for jumping on things verey fast when it comes to service of any kind on any vehicles
i dont have any such stickers underhood on mine, and its a Van Nuys car, so.,,
hmm....
i dont like the thought of a hose coming apart like that, that just isnt cool at all. I would almost rather just replace the hose myself, if they would supply the hose, hmm.. bet they wouldnt though...
hmm, what to do.... only thing thats not gonna end up being replaced soon are the axle housing and internals and shafts and backing plates, all lines and hose and brake partts are getting redone soon, its all goofed up right now.. i only have the front doing effective stopping right now..
so what brands of pre-flared tubing are the ones to stay away from ? im sure these auto parts stored like A/Z and napa have both inferior and better lines, both, right ? ive heard of replacement lines blowing out before, but havent seen proof of that though
thanks

Well, ya don't want copper or aluminum brake tubing!
Regular brake tubing should be fine. A steel tube is going to have a hard time blowing out... unless, maybe, it rusts through? I don't think they'd let you have the hose; if you install it wrong, they could be liable, since they should be doing the recall work. If they mark the vehicle as "recall fixed" and they didn't do the work, and something happens....
And check out that # I gave for the seatbelt recall... AM9154, which is the # for the re-issue of Safety Campaign 90C22(C).
