i called GM about aluminum drums and they told me that if I dont have j42 on my car then it couldnt have alum drums,
but it has GM alum drums on it, so what gives ? it has J50 and GT4 and is Z28 in 84

anyone ?

 

There are lots of them in junkyards, maybe somebody stuck a set on there before you got the car

 

i dunno,.... i owuldnt think anyone around here would know about that stuff, no one here seems to get into stuff liek this with their vehicles, they just drive em and screw with wiring and well thats about it, if you can find a pair of unscored ones then i want ot know. id like to keep aluminum on it. i dotn think anyoen owuld have gone to the trruble to locate and swap this one to aluminum, there had to be some other option they came with, wouldtn there be ?

My 83 came with them. My little brother got a set and stuck them on his LG4 POS 84 Z28 when he discovered the previous owner had "saved" a little too much money on brake jobs. My other brother put a set on his 87 MC SS.

They used to be real plentiful. Maybe not so much any more, but I still see them all the time in boneyards. I've seen people walk up to the counter, ask for drums in general, and get handed aluminum ones. So, I wouldn't think it's too odd that your car has a pair of them, even if they weren't in its RPO list.

 

I saw 'em once, and didn't grab them- back then, I thought they were a cheap aftermarket drum. I came on here, asked about 'em, and went back a week later. That was the same car that had a split rear folding seatback that matched my interior; I have a solid rear seatback that doesn't match the rear bucket seat bottoms.

A week later, both were gone when I went back. Damn, damn, damn...

They were on a 2.8 Firebird that had been option'd out the butt... it even had a nifty little console insert that held cassette tapes in retractable spring-loaded compartments! So either the guy got that aluminum drum option too, or, someone swapped 'em on.

 

hmmmm interesting,.. im sure mine are toasted from wear, maybe if I can look in the right places i can find some, before i got this car last week i had no idea aluminum drums were used on any common cars like these, check these two pages out, they list all you can find them on, i had no idea... wild stuff..
