3/4" on the top part. 1" on the lower tube that the top part slides into.

Look at the pics on my site. I stripped down my steering column to just a shaft. I shaved off 10 pounds removing all the extra stuff.

I didn't actually strip down a tilt steering column. I sold it off and picked up a non tilt column from the junk yard to strip down.

Any column from a 82-92 third gen will fit.

Yea, I've been spending a better part of week removing those damn tar sheets on the floor pans, getting ready to paint the interior white.

I've been working on converting this little TA into a road car for a while now.

The next thing on the list was adding a squeeze release steering steering hub.
You brought up a good point with going with a non-tilt. Now you've got me scratching my head this evening.
