Well if your buying an auburn posi with 3.73 set up for A 10 BOLT AND THEN WANT TO TURN AROUND AND BUY A 9" FOR THEN YOU wasted YOUR MONEY..... None of that stuff will swap over...
As far as buying a kit to put a 9" in YES you definately have to buy a kit....Essentially you can use ANY ford 9" third member and gearing...BUT you need Custom Axles and a Custom housing....Unless you are very good at welding and fabrication in which case you could weld brackets on and shorten a stock housing...
Moser and Currie both sell the housings with all of the brackets welded on and a bolt on torque arm bracket.....Then you will also need an adaptor U-joint as the Yoke on the diff is larger than a thirdgen driveshaft...
As I found out there is no EASY/Cheap way to do it...Plus for some cars you will have to buy new rear brakes....For instance I had a 9 bolt GM rear with disk brakes...They did not make housings to use these....So I had to pay another 600 for a pro-street wilwood disk setup....Trust me the prices snowball fast...

the number of splines changed starting in '88 with some cars i believe and all had the new ones in 89, or was it they started in 89? I can't remember. At least this'll get back up to the top and someone else can tell us both.
