Help! Rear End Is About Dead.
The car has the 9-bolt disc rear and today going down the road it statred to hum really load. When you let off the gas it stops. The front seal is leaking on the differential so I opened the plug to add some fluid before it goes into the shop on Sat. It was only half a quart low, but there is metal shavings in the fluid. What could be going wrong?

It sounds like after 17 years of getting 'beat on' in the Trans Am the gears are simply getting worn out. I'm surprised that the POSI has held up longer than the gears !!
Your car is an 85 ?? I Know they put them in the Camaro starting in 87 but I thought that 86 was the first year for the 9-bolt in the Firebird ??

It had the 9-bolt. I just swapped it out and put a 98 3.23 posi 10-bolt in it from a camaro.

Rdog, you have any pics of how much the back whels stick out now? Also, did you measure the rear to find out how much wider it is? I have heard anywhere from 3 inches to 5 inches, so which measuement is correct?

Sorry no pics. I have 4th gen. wheels also so there is no sticking out. The rear is only about 3" wider.
