Another disc conversion question

Well, I've researched the posts in the archive and still cannot find definitive answer:

I have a 1983 Trans Am that had drum rear brakes. I have just gotten a 1985 IROC rear with the J65 rear discs. I would like to install it this weekend, but want to get all the stuff needed first.

The calipers are rusty but I think still usable, but all the hoses need to be changed.

Can anyone forecast any problems I might run into??

Thanks!

if everything is all original, like the calipers, they will need a rebuild to take care of a problem they had way back when.

Do a search for 'disc brake recall' or 'rear disc TSB'.

The piston would bottom out and the rear discs wouldn't work.

If you can't find any info, email me and I'll dig it out and send it.

Hey thanks for the reply!

I'm pretty sure that this TSB was already taken care of, coming out of an '85 and all, but is there anyway to tell by examination whether is WAS done?

Any problems I can expect concerning fittings, fit, or operation?

I'm thinking I might need to get metric/std adaptors for the hose end (to the body) but do you think I will need to change the prop. valve too?

I've already got so much $$ tied up in this thing, and just want to do it right, once!

Later,
P.

as far as small details, be sure to get some extra bleeders for the rebuild, in case one strips and some extra copper washers used to secure the hose to the caliper. There's two per hose.

You may be ok as far as the proportioning valve, but I think Andy can answer that one better.

Plenty of brake fluid on hand, service manual showing the components and how they are assembled, including the method to adjust the parking brake.

The proportioning valve won't be right. I have just made the drum to camaro disk swap on my monte and have no rear brakes.

It seems GM has done the same thing on the impala. Just like them to cut corners. Take a look at that link to see what i'm talking about. From what other have said this mod really works. I'm going to try it tomarrow and post back and let you know how it works. You can also find a disk proportioning valve outta the junk yard or go aftermarket. The aftermarket requires you to redo the whole brake system from the mastercylinder to the exsisting brake lines.

P.S. My monte uses the same mastercylinder and proportioning valve that you have.
