Cowl Hood Inlet

I own a 1990 Firebird Formula with the 305 TBI. I am going to replace the stock air cleaner with a K&N open element cleaner. Has anyone removed the plate behind the grill on the hood-cowl to allow for more air-flow? If so, have you had any problems with water getting into the engine compartment and causing problems. I don't think rain would be a huge problem, but what about washing the car?

I have a "bulge" hood off a 84 t/a which is open. I also have an open element air cleaner. And have never had a problem in the rain or when washing the car with water getting into the aircleaner.
