Check out all of the tech arcticles on this page. Your free mods include doing the ultimate TBI mods, fuel pressure, and timing to name a few, as well as the obvious weight reductions (spare tire, jack, back seat). Some cheap mods are open element air filter, cat removal (if you don't have any tests to pass), platnum spark plugs, 8mm wires, high per. distributer capand rotor. Some of the best bang for the buck mods in my opinion are: gears and posi, and entire exuast (headers on back). Also, if you have an auto, a good shift kit will make for some sweet, side kickin' shifts.
open element and headers were definetly SOTP differences...i didnt really notice anything from the cat back but headers helped alot...i was gonna get posi and gears next but i really need to go ahead and do a cam/intake swap so i can fix my leaky intake at the same time
