Free HP for L03s

I've seen a bunch of threads and websites telling us to buy 14x3 open element air cleaners, or how to turn our current set up into ram air. But here is the simplest way to get more air. You don't have to remove the air silencer ring, or get rid of the thermac device. Instead of buying a Fram CA326 air filter (or it's equivalent) buy the Fram CA327 (I believe it's for TBI trucks) then put your air cleaner lid on upside down. That's it. Same stud, same wingnut, it should all work. If you want you could go put a K&N or Proshot filter in, but I'm getting more than enough air to my TBI 350 (my 305's long gone) with just the Fram filter and this setup.

I tried that when I first bought the car, the lid (upside down) wasn't even tight, plus the way the lid is, it does basically nothing for performance, I recommend to just get the open element and be done with it

Funny shiznit.

I'm trying right now to see what newer TBI trucks came with and if they would work on our TB or even if you could swap out the entire TBI if it would benifit. All I think I really need is the elbow the goes over the top of the TB, then run 3.5" pipe threw the battery tray and stick a K&N filter on the end of it. I did something similar to my TPI bird. You could here the air howling in esp on cold morninings when you first start it. One guy got a scope from a ram air mustang kit and put it on his. It looked tight.

I also want to use my TPI triangular strut tower bace, and that ain't happening with anything larger than a 8" filter. And K&N does not make a filtered top cover that big.

That's why you go to the taller filter, if you leave in the shorter one, the lid will hit one of the sensors and won't seal.

By leaving the old air assembly in place, wouldn't it act as a heat shield, getting you colder air?

dex.... is that a sentance man? Hey the lid thing is a good idea if you are on a tight budget. It works fine, gives it a little bit of a different sound too when its sucking up the air. I'd still just do the open element though.

NO!!! I did it, and it's like that now.

I have a $125,000 house that I only owe ~$75K on and I've only had it 2 yrs. I wouldn't say I'm on welfare.

It's called ingenuity. Granted I have a K&N filter, but it didn't cost 1 penny more for the truck filter than it would have for the #1450. And I don't have to worry about finger prints. And it IS an open element.

I'm one to go for all go and no show, but that's just me. I really only want my tail lights looking good, for obvious reasons.

BTW, a guy on here did that with a paper filter on a chassis dyno and picked up 6 little ponies. I'd say it'd be a little more if it was a K&N.

Not necessarily. I have found that a very clean, high-quality air filter will do a much better job than a K&N will; problem is, the K&N can withstand dirt a heck of a lot longer than the paper filter.

PS - I use the K&N myself, because it's still a darn good filter.

I don't know about newer trucks w/TBI, but there are aftermkt parts (like AIRAID) that accomplish the above. Or you can DIY with Caddy junkyard parts. See
