knock sensors

I had unpluged the knock sensor on the 283 in the jeep with the tbi backfiring has gone away. The engine is built with forged pistons and using a street rod block hugger type header so I had to move the knock sensor to a threaded hole above the oil filter. Could this location and the piston type have something to do with it picking up the noises and retarding the timing? We're using 305 knock sensors and the esc module. Is there another we might sub that is less sensetive?

Can you hear any audible knock? You might want to do some plug reads and see what is really going on. If the engine runs good with the sensor disconnected and your not running into a detonation problem, then you can use a resistor in place of the k-sensor to fool the ecm and not through a code.
