2.73 to 3.27 gears
2.73 to 3.27 gears
Basically a few years back (long before I knew squat about cars, even now just know a little) A stock LO3 with a rebuilt and strengthened 700r4 busted the stock 2.73 gears. Since replacements from GM were out of the question money wise and where I am (Ontario, Canada) camaro parts are hard to come by. I ended up with 3.27 gears. Now has anyone swapped out to 3.27 gears and basically what times have you gotten? It's definitly pulling much harder than before but since 1/4 mile tracks here are rare to non-existent I have no real basis for what I got. I'd imagine it breaking the 16 barrier simply due to the gearing swap. I have now ram air, k&n filter, modified air cleaner setup, ported heads and ported intake manifold with underpulley kit, injector spacer, eibach springs coming soon.
Here's a long story but interesting,
The ram air is sealed and modded pretty well that 1/8 travel on the accelerator is enough to hold speeds of 65-85 mph on the freeway, the aforementioned 3.27 gearing. It's a bit odd but my sport coupe came with 16x8 IROC-Z wheels rather than the 15x7 normal option (I have aftermarket American Racing 15x7 rims which I put my winter tires on). The 700 r4 transmission was strengthened and modified so that top speed isn't limited. I figure that the 115 barrier doesn't apply since the spedometer reads up to 115 mph but with stock gearing it went well off the meter, the rpm went up and the car went faster. The only thing I can figure this working is that the ecm doesn't recieve a VSS signal but that then ecm doesn't give a code 24 or any at all. It loved to give me an egr code 32 when the egr was busted so I know it worked. The only thing I can remember was day 2 after my father had this car he ripped out the engine (built an engine lift in our garage) and messed with the transmission. He can't remember what he did anymore.. he doesn't even remember building an engine lift. I did this late one night but I managed to hit 3900 RPM in 4th gear. Now correct me if I'm wrong but with stock wheels that's 128 mph now the VSS doesn't know I put in 3.27 gears so for all intents and puposes the VSS should think I was at 152 mph and have stopped me well before it got to the actual 128 mph. I know my 4th is limited though not by a VSS but by a valve in my transmission I push anymore and I drop to third gear. I got the gm kit 8673948 but I haven't installed it yet. Thanks to my ram air I managed to push 4200 rpm in 4th gear with the same 2/3 pedal travel. Now this is a mod I'd like to share to people, well the how to keep the speedometer and ecm happy no code 24 while breaking 115 mph but since the person who did it doesn't even remember he took out an engine let alone tinker with it, I'm at a loss. I have a theory though on what he did. He may have somehow altered the signal generated by the VSS so that it'll never signal high that it hits 115 mph. This would explain having the semi functional speedometer (of which take 83% of the reading and that's your true speed, tested by having a car with a working speedometer and we compared 65 75 and 85 mph speeds and readings but with 2.73 being only 83% of 3.27 that was a waste of time) and no code 24. I retrieved codes and only got a code 32 of which I replaced the egr and no more ses light but still have the code 32 when I retrieve codes so how do I clear it out? So here's the mind bender... how do you break 115 mph, not trigger a code 24, have a functional speedometer, all with a stock chip? 88 Sport Coupe Camaro LO3 305 TBI V8.

what I am thinking but i could be wrong, is that for starters, you need to change a gear in the tranny, and the speedo (vss box or something like that) to get your speed right, and also there is a mod for the speed limiter, wich as far as i can tell just makes the car let you have full throttle in fourth. And as far as the stock chip is conserned it shouldnt have any problem with you breaking the 115 barrier, unless you hit 115 and simply havent got the power to go faster. also how do know that 115 is you limit? I could be wrong but it sounds like you said its the limit because thats as high as your speedo goes, but thats not how the car knows what its limit is. being an 88 305, i wouldnt expect get get more than 115 or 120 outa it, especially because you have 3.27s intead of 2.73, 3.27 will cut back your top speed and 2.73 will give you more top speed. i dont know if this helps or not, i think i even lost myself in this post.

I've got no prob with the speedometer personally. I'm too lazy to do the gear swap at the moment. As far as knowing my speed, I can always do the math in my head which is what I've been doing for years now or I drive just slightly faster than traffic. As far as the limiter goes, I've done some research, got a book on the transmission I got and talked to a few mechs and from what I've learned and what an old guy at GM told me was prior to 92, the ECM ONLY controls TCC lock up. It was the governor that was your limiter. So with that I think I can conclude it was a govenor swap my father did. Unless GM had its limit at 150 mph which was the top speed of my setup prior to the 3.27 gears, of which now I'm stuck around 130.. slightly less. I'm hoping to have that problem fixed when I put in my b4c police package modified kickdown valve. The kit is pretty complete, I've identified the parts and here's what it has, the modified kickdown valve which handles 3-4 shifting. A shift kit similar to b&m's design (or did b&m get it from gm? well the police package was created before b&m was I think...) so it'll have more firm shifts and a .471 inch TV boost valve which increases the pressure and improves all shifts. I only wonder which one should I install.. the red or double yellow one? The .471 was gm's high performance tv boost valve so that's a plus and having WOT available with 4th gear sounds good too.

I'm in the process of doing the same BW 3.27 gear swap I just got new calipers, rotors, pad, and brakes lines though I'm not too sure about the emergency brake cables. How or what have you done to make yours work to make your emergency cables cause I've never done this before? I never done this swap before cause I wanna turn some heads to represent all the thirdgen owners everywhere I go.
