I am planning on buying a K/N drop base open element air filter with the Xstream top. What size height will the hood still clear with. The 2 3/4 or the 3 1/8. I would imagine anything taller than that wouldnt fit.

1. Get a non drop base.
2. 3" should be fine.

 

If I had to do it over again I'd get a non drop, but I cant seem to find just the base. Maybe a swap meet.

14x3 is what you're looking for.

 

If you are going to go with an open element you should get a hood. Either a cowl hood or a ASCD hood because I ran an open element for a while and the heat from my engine and radiator just slowed my car way down. You should check out a ram air box at www.ramairbox.com or go with the intake off of a truck or L69 HO dual snorkel, but don't forget the cool-air tubes.

 

Well how much of a differnce is a drop base vs a non-drop base? Why is getting a non- drop base better?

 

The non-drop base lets you take out the spacer ring. Think about it: Isn't lifting up a drop base air cleaner with a 1"+ tall ring stupid?
