Modding my RS

Hey guys, I've been reading this forum for a while now but this is my first post. First of all, I have a '91 Camaro RS convertible with the LO3 and T5. The car is basically stock with the only mods being a catback and open element. Its got about 57k miles on it so its running pretty strong. I would like to know what you guys think I should do to it next. I was thinking about doing the LT1 cam swap but I dont have enough experience to do it myself and it seems to me that the cost of labor would outweigh the performance gains unless I put new heads on at the same time. but I only have about $1000 at most. Any input would be appreciated, and sorry for the length of this.

Jim

the first things everyone is gonna tell you is the free 'mods'

1,000 you could get some gears and have money left over for headers, or something

I'm currently saving for a BIG MOD....a 500 hp 383 and 6 speed

Allthough a good cam would be a nice addition I would say do some easy bolt ons before puting in the cam. the biggest baddest cam in the worl won't do anything if your inlet or exhaust doesn't flow enough for the cam. I would save my money and put an intake on it and headers and cat to compliment the catback and check out the free TBI mods in the tech articles section on elsewhere on this site. Also a custom chip and t-stat and underdrive pulleys would also help. You could probably get all those for less than a grand depending on who you buy from, and they will make more power then just a cam swap.

I say LT1 cam, edelbrock intake, s/r torquer heads, and edelbrock or slp headers.
$50+$215+$620+$250ish=Just over a grand

And you'll be running 14's if you have posi, if not maybe low 15's.

This can all be achieved cheaper if you buy parts from other people.

Since you can't do the cam swap yourself yet, go for the gears, slp $99 posi and headers. My 3.42 gear swap really woke my 91 Rs convertible up. You will also eventually want some sub frame connectors to help take some twist out of that convertible.

Thanks a lot guys for all your input; I wish I didnt have to worry about labor charges otherwise I'd do a head swap, but from what you guys are saying I think I'll probably go with gears and headers first. I'll save money for some bigger mods later on. Thanks everyone.
