I just bought my car and it burns alot of oil. It only burns like the first 2 seconds I start it, but it is a pretty big cloud. Is this bad? Is it husrting anything? Thanks

 

That should be the valve stems leaking.Not really anything to worry about.

 

As long as its not at wot, you should be fine.. valve seals are going though, but a hell of a lot easier and cheaper than doing o-rings...

 

o-rings are part of the valve seals...well part of the valve train. piston rings are what u dont wanna do... u might as well replace the motor... i learned that after dumping thousands into the mighty 305...now a .060 over 305 whatever that is

 

oops yeah I meant o-rings of the pistons...

why spend all that on a 305? you could have bought a decent 350 or something for a few thousands...

 

Get or borrow a compression tester and do a leak-down test. If you hear air escaping through the intake, breathers, or exhaust it's the rings. Otherwise, it's very common for a high milage chevy to blow smoke after sitting. The valve seals get worn and oil leaks into the combustion chamber. When you crank it--volia--smoke. If you don't use much oil between checks live with it. Otherwise, you could always have your heads rebuilt or replaced. Which is not a bad idea on a high milage motor anyway.

For the ultimate bolt-on power upgrade go with Vortec or SR Torquer heads.

 

Also a cheaper route if you don't have the cash on hand use CD2 oil burning additive. You can get it a Auto Zone and such, works good for about 6000 miles.
