Can someone recommend a good coil for TBI motor
I'm looking for stock replacement but more volts, for an 89 tbi motor. Anyone recommend one?

I use the blaster coil, and I really like it so far. It smoothed out my idle and powerband a little. It's very easy to install, the hardest part is drilling out the stock rivets, and not dropping bolts (I do this all the time, it sucks)

I bought mine for $44 U.S.D. I really liked the way that my idle smoothed out and my throttle response was better. I also installed an MSD 6aL ignition to compliment my coil. I had to buy an adapter for that though. It was only $25 U.S.D. for the adapter. Good luck man.

I'm still using the stock coil. I haven't had any problems with it missing up to 5500rpm and I'm in the 13's. If you can get the coil for dirt cheap then yeah, go for it, but don't waste your money on MSD and other C.D. ignition setups on a low compression low rev v8!!! More voltage is always a good thing. If you've got a power adder, you had better have more volts.
I think the stock GM HEI setup is plenty for a healthy 350 running on pump gas. That's my $.02 take it or leave it.

For TBI try this...
You can get a coil or an entire ignition system. I recomend Accel's 300+. You get a coil that is a dirrect replacement for your TBI's coil, a complete ignition system with multiple spark discharge, and a built in rev-limiter. It uses less current than a stock coil and produces more voltage. It is a plug-in instalation for your '89 TBI.

I use a MSD Blaster....
I have two camaros, I use MSD ignition products on both. If you want better spark do this.
Get a summit cataloge and get
- MSD Blaster Coil part #8226 - About $50
- MSD Distributer Cap part #8426 - About $15
- MSD Rotor part #8427 - About $8
A good set of 8mm or bigger spark plug wires. I recommend Taylor's spriro-pro 8mm wires They cost around $60-80, come in all colors and styles.
Last but not least get a good set of spark plugs, I'm not talking about the $.99 Autolites, Get good plugs. I use splitfire, but bosch platinum +4 or Accel's U-Groove will work nicely. These should be $30-40
If like your post said your looking for JUST a coil, get the blaster.

I don't believe in the term "volts" because that doesn't tell you how long it takes for the coil to produce volts when it's only got millisecs before it's used to fire another cylinder. I care more about how many volts can be made when the car is turning at 5500rpm! I haven't seen any company that actually advertises these specs or even testes their equipment/coils vs OEM stuff. The commen misconception is "20% more power" in the Summit and Jegs....that's like reading a muffler ad which claims 20hp!
The GM HEI setup is a great setup, I'd leave well enough alone and maybe borrow a friends coil to see if it makes any bit of a difference in performance.
BTW, I'm running 8mm MSD wires, replacement cap and rotor, Autolite spark plugs with enough gap to keep things smooth, stock coil and stock ign. module.
My next upgrade will be like the LS1 motors with their CNP (Coil Near Plug). I'll need to buy a $300 unit called the E.dist, the coils, and a 96 vortec distrib which has a cam position sensor. THIS is what I call a substantial upgrade worth the money.

on a slightly modified vehicle your not going to notice the affects of a coil, the only affect your might notice is when it fries your ignition module, located in the rear of the distributor. I was running an accel super coil for a while, nothing changed when i added the coil, just burned out the module after a couple of weeks.

I use the MSD dual connector coil. Before it I could pull about 5,000rpm before the tach started to do a stand still. Now I can pull easily to 5,500rpm. I could pull more, but by that time my stock manifold and cam don't even try to keep up. Anyways, I was already running a MSD-6A, 8.8mm Accel wires, new Accel header plugs, and cap and rotor. Maybe it was all of those in combination with the coil that really topped things off, but I must say for $40, it was the best dollar to result mod I've done.

I used to work at napa and I used to test coils all the time, the stock gm coil was about 30k volts and and marine gm coil toped at about 48k... all pretty wierd considering I tested my little coil off my yamaha 350 dirt bike and it hit 50k volts... I just HAD to test it after I electricuted myself with the dern thing....
