Modding the RS
I have a 91 RS 305 5-speed Vert. So far I have just put on an open element and catback system. Now I really want to mod this thing and get some more power out of it, but I cannot do any of the work for any big jobs. Let's say I have about 500 bucks to spend on it, what would u guys suggest I do next if I have to figure in what I'm going to have to pay for labor??
I bought an LT1 cam for 40 dollars US, and it cost me another 400 canadian to install it with new springs, lifters, waterpump, and timing chain. that was a good mod.
you might be able to do gears for 500 dollars as well.

Thanks a lot for the replies guys. That's a great, informative site you've got there 91bird305, thanks for pointing me to it. These labor charges are killing me though. Just out of curiosity, how hard is it really to swap in a new cam. I only have standard tools and most of my knowledge is simply knowledge not any experience. The most work I've done is putting on a catback and open element. Just wondering how hard it would be for me to put in a cam?

RallySport92RS,
I was just wondering how much the LT1 cam helped you, and if you have any et's. Many people do the swap but then never actually let us know how much it helped. I've had the cam waiting to go in, but then I saw one guy post that he only gained .2 sec off his et after the swap-in which case I don't think it would be worth it.

Easy to understand for any newbie, and educational at the same time. It's nice to see people that have the time and knowledge to design and host a webpage like that (and that also includes the people of thirdgen.org) pass their knowledge onto others.
Now after all the compliments
I've got 2 things that you need to address. I'm only saying these to help you help others, no flame intended, OK?1. You mention in the "Spark Plug Wires" section that it's best to have "high resistance" wires to carry the spark farther. That's incorrect. You want the resistance to be as low as possible. Kinda like you want the resistance in the exhaust system to be as low as possible.
2. You made no mention of a lower temperature fan switch that is needed to take advantage of the lower temperature thermostat that was just installed. You gently touch on it in the "Computer Chip" portion, but with our cars, the chip has nothing to do with the fan kicking on. It's all governed by the fan switch. The computer only controls the fan in TPI cars, and IIRC, it's only the secondary fan.
Again, no flame intended, just trying to help you help.

r90camarors, I don't have any ET's because the nearest track is about 2 hours away.but i can tell you that there was a noticeable difference in performance. I lost a little bit of low end torque because the torque curve got moved up in the rpm range but the torque at the higher rpm's is way better then stock. I'd suggest doing an intake with the swap. I didnt but have talked to a few people that did and they say it helps quite a bit as well.
Also if you do it, make sure to adjust your fuel pressure, after I did this I got some of the low end torque back.

After reading your site, I finally figured out why I could never get rid of the f-in whine in my gears...
I ended up spending on 2 shim kits trying to get rid of whine in my gears having to settle for a quieter whine...
First time around it was louder than hell, second time reduced, but noticable at different loads.
I have to say though putting in gears were a hell of a lot easier than removing headers... damn a/c makes things hard as hell.

Glad my site could help.
Yeah gears aren't to bad if u have the right tools and know what u are doing. Good idea to add posi additive too.

Think a posi additive would help on an open diff to cut down on whine?
As for the stereo comment....the audio forum is around the corner...you can drowned out all the engine knock and gear whine u want over there, lol.
Whine's no big deal to me, just got my hopes up that I could get rid of it... oh well. I'm not into the whole stereo supersystem in the car deal, I prefer my home equipment a lot better and to get sound like that in my car I'd have to spend a fortune...
