fuel filter question

hi i have a 83 cfi 305 and want to replace my fuel filters so i head over to track auto and the guy gives me a cylindrical ff about the size of my fist .so i tell him i think thats the wrong part because i read in chiltons tbi motors have an inline type ff so he gives me these 2 small paper element filters .im looking at the motor and i cant figure out where they go .the best i can figure is they go into the 2 metal pipes running into the tb but as i follow the fuel line down the engine i see the fist sized cylinder very similar to the 1st filter the guy at autozone gave me .so i dont get it is it the big silver filter or the small paper filter.they didnt make these cars very user friendly. any help is greatly appreciated.

i got an 88 TA and my fuel filter was underneth the car on the drivers side. It looks like a metal cylinder..be carefull when changing it too, especially if you have a lot of rust. I broke the line and had to replace it
