Ignition problem

I posted this in the tech/general engine board but i'm not having too much luck. Here's the problem, above around 4200 RPM my ignition cuts off until the engine revs drop. The check engine light comes on and the tach drops to zero. Since the engine is obviously not dropping to zero rpm, I must be loosing the reference pulse to the ignition coil. What would cause this? Do you think changing the pickup coil will help or will I have to change the distributor?
Thanks for the help
