I had the same problem with my '91. Turned out there was a factory recall on the gas tank filler neck. I don't know if this applies to the '92's as well but its worth checking out. I got a free gas tank out of the deal.

Good luck!

Here ya go...

NHTSA Recall Information by Vehicle

If your vehicle is listed you will need to call your local stealerships service department and give them your vin number and ask them if there are any open campaigns on your vehicle.

Hope it helps!

My fuel filler neck was really broken and sagging. I was dreading buying a tank until I saw the recall.

Shiny and free...just the way I like it.

I think I have the same problem. My grandfather is retired from GM and he gave me General Motors customer service number (1-800-222-1020). Call that number and follow the prompts. When you talk to an operator you can give him your VIN and he can then tell you if there are any open campaigns on that VIN. GM says that not all VIN's produced between 10/1989 and 08/1992 are effected. I bought my 5-speed in April '02 and have notice the same thing. I called and they told me that I had no open campaigns for that VIN but I had them run my automatic RS (I bought it new July '91) and it had an open campaign. The bottom line is that if you are not the original owner, recalls become a little grayer since you do not know whats been done to the car in the past. Good luck SSean92...It's worth the hassle if this fixes your probem.

They told me without the letter from GM when the recall was issued that the service couldn't be performed, said they looked up EVERY SINGLE VIN for the recall and send letters to the original owners......

Well why don't i blow up my car due to a fuel leak, and sue you guys for half the cars on your lot, I bet i don't need a letter for that......

I am the 9th or 10th owner of my car. I have traced it back to its original Stealership where it was sold and then through 4 states and I didn't have a single problem with the recall. General Motors keeps a history of vin#'s and the recalls associated with them and if the campaign hasn't been closed they will preform the work regardless of the present owner.

I called my local stealership and talked to a service advisor, gave him my vin and asked if there were any open campains. He told me yes, that it was in the computer and gave me a date to bring it in. Once it was inspected it took 3 days for them to get my new fuel tank and install it. I paid $0 for this work, just signed the receipt and walked out.

I would suggest talking to the service manager if your vehicle has the fuel tank recall and the service advisor won't fix it. The number that TimRS put in his post will also work if you can't get anywhere with the local guys.

Good luck!

Johnny Camaro is right...follow this through to the end and be persistent...if you are covered it won't cost you a dime. If you don't call you have no excuses.

Until you guys get the fuel smell issue resolved, I'd suggest carrying a fire extinguisher in the car.
